Purpose: The purpose of this study was to elucidate the benefits of cementless, extensively porous, coated femoral stem in the patients who received revision total hip arthroplasty (THA).
Materials and Methods: Between August 1996 and May 2001, 31 hips in 30 patients underwent revision THA with cementless, extensively porous, coated femoral stem. We reviewed the results for the 23 hips, which were followed for at least 24 months. The mean follow-up period was 36 months (range, 24 to 72). The clinical and radiologic results were evaluated by Harris hip score (HHS) and serial roentgenographic findings, respectively.
Results: The preoperative HHS was 69 (range, 54 to 84) and last evaluated HHS was 93 (range, 78 to 99). Radiographically, no acetabular components demonstrated any evidence of migration, tilt, rotation or shedding of metal particles. All femoral components demonstrated no evidence of subsidence, pedestal or shedding of metal particles.
Conclusion: The femoral and acetabular components demonstrated radiographical stability and excellent clinical result in the revision THA done with cementless, extensively porous, coated femoral stem. Therefore, it was considered a useful prosthesis for revision THA.
